From there, we continue to Meknes, another of Morocco’s imperial cities and the former capital of Sultan Moulay Ismail. Here, you will visit important sites such as Bab Mansour, one of the most beautiful gates in Morocco, Sahrij Souani, and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail.

Today, we leave Fes and begin our journey south toward the Sahara Desert. Our first stop is Ifrane, a charming town often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” because of its alpine-style architecture, clean streets, and cool climate.

In the afternoon, we continue our journey through the scenic Ziz Valley, known for its palm groves, dramatic landscapes, and panoramic views. As we approach Merzouga, the landscape gradually changes, and the golden dunes of the Sahara begin to appear.

Along the way, you will stop to admire the magical desert sunset before continuing to your desert camp. In the evening, enjoy a traditional dinner, Berber music around the campfire, and a peaceful night under the stars.

Driving distance: approximately 470–480 km

It is highly recommended to wake up early this morning to witness the sunrise over the Sahara dunes, one of the most unforgettable moments of the trip. After breakfast at the camp, you will return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4, where your desert exploration continues.

Today is dedicated to discovering the fascinating surroundings of Merzouga. The region offers much more than sand dunes, with a variety of landscapes including desert plains, palm groves, seasonal lakes, nomadic settlements, and small villages rich in culture.

We begin with an off-road excursion to visit a nomadic family, where you will learn about their traditional lifestyle and enjoy a glass of Berber tea. We then continue to Khamlia village, known for its spiritual Gnawa music, brought by descendants of people originally from sub-Saharan Africa. Here, you can enjoy a live musical performance and experience another layer of Morocco’s cultural diversity.

Later, you may visit the nearby palm grove and, depending on the season, the Merzouga Lake or “Flamingo Lake,” which often attracts migratory birds.

After the excursion, return to your hotel to relax.

Dinner and overnight stay in Merzouga.

Driving distance: approximately 30–40 km

After breakfast, we leave the desert behind and head toward Rissani, a historic town that was once an important center of the ancient Tafilalet region. Rissani is still known for its traditional market and authentic atmosphere, especially on market days.

We then continue to Erfoud, famous for its fossil workshops and marble products. Here, you may visit a local fossil workshop and learn more about this unique regional craft.

From Erfoud, we travel through oasis towns and desert landscapes toward the spectacular Todra Gorges, one of the most dramatic natural sites in southern Morocco. Carved by the Todra River, these towering canyon walls are a favorite destination for nature lovers, photographers, and climbers. You will have time to walk through the gorge and enjoy lunch in the area.

In the afternoon, we continue toward Dades Valley, passing through Boumalne Dades. Along the way, we will stop to admire the incredible rock formations known as the Monkey Fingers, as well as panoramic views over the valley.

Driving distance: approximately 320 km

After breakfast, we continue through some of southern Morocco’s most beautiful landscapes. Our first route takes us through the Rose Valley, famous for its rose fields and annual Rose Festival held in May in Kelaat M’Gouna. During the festival season, the town comes alive with local celebrations and displays of rose-based products.

We then pass through the lush Skoura palm groves, one of the most attractive oasis areas in Morocco, before reaching Ouarzazate, often referred to as the “Gateway to the Desert.” Depending on timing and interest, you may visit one of the local film studios for which the city is well known.

Next, we continue to the legendary Ait Ben Haddou, one of the most famous kasbahs in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This fortified village has served as a filming location for many international productions, including Gladiator, The Mummy, Alexander, and episodes of Game of Thrones.

After visiting the kasbah and having lunch, we continue toward Marrakech by crossing the spectacular High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, with stops along the way for scenic views and photos.

Alex E
We picked this tour to see lots of places and have time to explore each one. We didn't spend as much time driving as we would on shorter trips. We visited four imperial cities, the Sahara desert, Casablanca, and the blue city. Our driver, Aziz, spoke excellent English and explained everything and answered our questions well. Thank you very much!
