Travel from Tangier through Chefchaouen on the first day of your vacation.
Upon arrival in Chefchaouan, your guide will pick you up from your Tangier location and continue the journey via the Rif Mountains and Tetoun City. Enjoy the nightlife in the stunning blue medina, which is full of interesting stores and street artists. Riad for dinner and the next night’s stay.
Journal Number Two:
Fes is our first stop after breakfast at the riad. We’ll visit Volubilis, a Roman archaeological site, and learn about its history. After our visit to the mosques, we will have lunch in Meknes and tour the 17th century medina, Bab el Mansour, and the Moulay el-Ismail shrine. We’ll travel to Fes in the late afternoon and stop for supper before checking into a riad for the night.
DAY 3: Tour led by FES
A fascinating cultural and historical tour of Fes will begin with a meeting at your riad by an experienced guide. Before lunch, you’ll take a tour of the Medina, which includes the Jewish Quarter and the Royal Palace Gate. We’ll visit the famed tanneries and the Quaraouine mosque, the world’s first university, in the afternoon before travelling to the top of the city for a stunning perspective of the city. We can also go to the pottery cooperative if you’d like. After supper, you’ll be able to relax and sleep in the same riad.
Day 4: Fes to Merzouga Desert
You will be picked up from your Fes accommodation in the early morning by your guide and taken to the southern area of Morocco. You’ll make a pit stop at Ifrane, Morocco’s answer to Switzerland, to admire the scenery and snap a few shots. Before heading to Azrou, you’ll witness the monkeys playing in the cedar forest. We’ll keep driving to Midelt, where we’ll have lunch. In the late afternoon, we’ll make our way via Ziz Gorge and over the Tizi n’Tighamt Pass to Errachidia. We’ll take a break for a panoramic view of the Ziz Valley before continuing on to Erfoud, Morocco’s fossil capital, where we’ll have supper and spend the night.
The fifth day will be spent exploring the Merzouga Desert and going camel trekking.
In the morning, we begin our tour to Erg Chebbi’s sand dunes. Gnawa music, which originated in Ghana and Sudan, will be performed in a Berber home. We’ll see disused mines, nomadic Berber people, and a palm-fringed oasis. We’ll return to Merzouga for lunch. For our next excursion, we’ll board one of the waiting camels for a ride into the desert sands.
The camels will be loaded with water, food, blankets, and other necessities before we set off for the desert. The camel ride will take 1.5 hours and each person will have their own camel.
After setting up camp, you can take a stroll through the dunes to catch a sunset or play sandboarding on the dunes. Once you’ve seen the sun go down, you’ll head back to the camp for some Moroccan Berber whiskey (mint tea). After that, you can expect a delicious Moroccan Berber tagine meal back at the camp. The festivities will begin after supper. Traditional Berber nomad music will be performed by local musicians. After that, you’ll be able to gaze up at the night sky and relax in the desert. Day 6: Travel to and from the deserts of Merzouga and Dades Gorges.
You’ll be awoken by your guide’s soft voice to witness the sun rise over the sand dunes of the Sahara. We’ll take camels back to Merzouga for breakfast and showers after our time in the desert. We’ll travel across the hamada (black desert) to Rissani, where we’ll visit the lively local market, before continuing on to the Todra Gorge. Before returning to the hotel for supper and an overnight stay in Dades Gorge, we may do rock climbing or trekking in the canyons (extra bookings may be necessary).
The Seventh Day: A March to the Dádes Gorges National Park
We start our drive down the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs after breakfast, stopping to admire the massive kasbahs on each side of the road. Before we get to the Skoura palm grove, we’ll take in the stunning scenery of the Valley of the Roses. As we make our way to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou through Taourirt Kasbah, we’ll pass by locations used in films like The Man Who Would Be King, Jewel of the Nile, Jesus of Nazareth, The Message, Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, and Gladiator, to name a few.
Telouet, a Berber settlement in the High Atlas Mountains, and the Kasbah el Glaoui will be our next destinations. In Telouet, we’ll have a bite to eat before descending the Tizi n’Tichka. For supper and your riad overnight, you’ll arrive in Marrakech at night.
Marrakech Guided Tour for the 8th Day
The next day, you’ll have a private guide take you around Marrakech. A visit to the famous Palace of Bahia, a lavishly decorated palace, is on the itinerary for the first half of our tour. Before we leave the medina, we’ll take a stroll through the Jewish Quarter, which has a unique architectural style separate from the others, and see the Saadian tombs.
In addition to the Koutoubia Mosque, a landmark of Marrakech, we’ll visit the Medersa Ben Youssef, an old school of Quranic study with beautiful Arabian-Andalucian architecture. With so many orange juice stands, snake charmers, and traditional water sellers, the world-famous Jemaah El Fna square will be our final stop. Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and relax on one of the city’s many rooftop terraces.
After that, we’ll head to the magnificent Majorelle Gardens, where you can take your time exploring this tranquil haven in the middle of the city. You can learn about the Berber people’s history and traditions at the Berber Museum, which is housed in the bright blue villa. You can also see some of their beautiful traditional clothing.
